Villa del Balbianello
a villa immortalized in cinema
Villa Balbianello is one of the most beautiful residences of Lake Como that is known throughout the world. Located in Tremezzina, on the tip of Dosso Lavedo point, it was built by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini at the end of the eighteenth century from the remains of a Franciscan monastery. The Garden at Villa del Balbianello is always kept maintained, with terraces, plane trees pruned in the shape of a candelabra, antique statues and the elegant and romantic loggia. Today, the villa belongs to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) the Italian National Trust for Italy. Over the years it has been used in movie sets numerous times. In 1940, Mario Soldati shot some scenes of Piccolo Mondo Antico with Alida Valli. In 1946, Christian-Jacque filmed some scenes of La Certosa di Parma. Later, in 1992, Mario Orfini choose this wonderful natural setting to shoot the last film with Adriano Celentano: Jackpot. A Month by the Lake by John Irvin was filmed in 1995. But it was an episode of Star Wars in 2002 which made the villa world news as part of the set chosen for one of the most popular films in cinematic history.
