UGIT Lago di Como
the little silver fish of lake Como
Have you ever heard of Ugit? They are small fish – alevins – just born into the freshwater lake, or ‘ugit’ as they are called in the dialect spoken around Lake Como that is often referred to internationally as #lakeComodistrict. Silvia Pecis, a young creative originating from Varenna recalls this term from the stories her grandfather told her. «They are the Ugit,» he said to her in dialect, «The small newborn of freshwater fish called avannotti, those that are all eyes», and that is how it came to be that she decided to transform them into little gems of noble metal to be inserted into bracelets of pure silk that are typical of the Como and Lecco area. And so UGIT Lago di Como® was created. Each piece of jewellery is rigorously hand-made and created by using the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. This is a process whereby a piece of jewellery is first created in wax form, which in turn is used to make a mould to produce the desired piece in precious metal, which when combined with prestigious Lario silk forms a bracelet. In short, a real gem made on Lake Como.
