Lecco Italia
Built in 1905 in an eclectic neo-gothic style on the site of a previous building to house the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. It later became the headquarters of the Inland Revenue and retained that function until 1964. This role earned it the nickname of the “Palace of Fears”. The complex also includes the adjacent porch building, constructed in 1902 by architect Adriano Gazzari, which connects Piazza XX Settembre with the beautiful promenade. The building has three floors, and a rectangular tower with triple lancet windows, built around 1926. Used for various functions, the palace, renovated by the city of Lecco in 2012, has a display area for temporary exhibitions on the ground floor. The first floor houses the Municipal Art Gallery’s permanent section for contemporary art, graphics and photography; and among the most important artists on display are Enrico Castellani, Enrico Baj, Gio Pomodoro, Mimmo Rotella, Emilio Scanalino, Alik Cavaliere together with other well-known local artists. In addition, the third floor is home to the Cultural Centre for Alpinism in Lecco.
