Villa Melzi is a historic building that together with its surrounding properties has been declared to be a national monument and is located at the entrance to Bellagio. Built between 1808 and 1810 on the instructions of Francesco Melzi the Duke of Lodi (1753-1816), Vice President of the Italian Napoleonic Republic, and later, Grand Chancellor of the Kingdom of Italy. The building was designed by Giocondo Albertolli who created an understated and elegant villa. The complex comprises not only the house, but also the chapel in which the remains of the Melzi family lie, gardens that connect Bellagio with Loppia, an orangery which today is a museum and the pine woods on the hill. The English style gardens were created by the architect Luigi Canonica and by the botanist Luigi Villoresi, who also realized the reorganization of the Villa Reale in Monza Park. Franz Liszt stayed at the villa, where he composed the Sonata a Dante.
