ancient Paths of Como: the Strada Regia
Two different walkways that depart from Como and extend along the two sides of the arm of Lake Como: one going towards Bellagio and one to Menaggio. One is called the Strada Regia and the other the Vecchia Regina. The first was a network of mule trails that connected all the local villages allowing the residents of the area to move and facilitated trading activities and exchanges. It is still transitable today even by bike if you wish, and at the halfway point provides you with a panorama of exceptional beauty. The Via Regina however, was for centuries the main route of communication that connected the lake with the Spl Pass and Maloja Pass in Switzerland and along it transited the travellers, traders and armies that gave rise to numerous cultural exchanges and more. Between Nobiallo and Rezzonico there is the tract that is still today perhaps the most loved by trekkers. Both routes have a natural beauty that has fascinated for hundreds of years both Italian and foreign visitors. The Anglo-Saxons included this part of the lake in their Grand Tour especially because of the textile industry and its noted weaving and silk industry. Following the Vecchia Regina from Colonno to Cadenabbia you can walk along a section for about 10 km that is now known by all as the GreenWay that winds through the villages along the shoreline of the lake.
