Lecco is considered the Manzoni city par excellencea, not only because the historical novel I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) is set there, but also because it houses Villa Manzoni, where the young Alexander spent many years of his childhood and adolescence. The Manzoni Museum is located in the renowned villa. The villa was the residence of the Manzoni family for two centuries until it was sold in 1818 by the writer to the Scola family, who kept it unchanged until the 60s when it was soldto the city of Lecco. In this villa, Alessandro Manzoni spent most of his childhood and adolescence. Inside different editions of the novel are exhibited together with some memorabilia of the writer. The family chapel and cellars are very suggestive. The Manzonia s itinerary, inspired by the novel of the Promessi Sposi, includes visits, not only to the family villa, but also Addio Monti and the convent of Fra Cristoforo in the district of Pescarenico, and to the Casa di Lucia in the Olate district. Outside Lecco in Somasca, the Castello dell’Innominato overlooks and dominates the lake towards Calolziocorte and Olginate. Lecco and its surroundings are also synonymous, for those few who still do not know, with Leonardo da Vinci. The Tuscan genius spent a few years in the area and left definite traces of his passage. Some scholars see the mountains of Lecco in some of his most famous landscapes, while others credit him with the invention of the hand-propelled ferry that is still working today and unites Imbersago on the province of Lecco side of the River Adda to Villa d’Adda on the province of Bergamo side. It is possible to walk or cycle along the river Adda from Lecco to Trezzo and even on to Milan. The route is immersed in a naturalistic setting of inestimable value and charm.
